I’ve sorely neglected my summer shoe game in the past few years. I sought to remedy this problem this year for a number of reasons. Check out my thought process and a few of my favorite summer kicks below!
Shoes can completely change the vibe of an outfit.
Now, in my personal opinion, all accessories have the ability to do this but I don’t think anybody can disagree with me about the power of a good shoe. I mean there are shows based around beautiful shoes – Sex in the City, anyone?
This summer I wanted to have options so that I could further express myself through my outfits. Do I want to be sassy with a strappy heel? Do I want to be laid back with a white tennis shoe? Or do I wanna go in with a chic flat?
Comfort is becoming more important to me.
I used to be able to pay no mind to the comfort level of a shoe. I’d even go a half size down just to get a cute pair on clearance. (That’s crazy, right?!) My only concern was about how a shoe looked. But I’m finding that at 31, I need to have a few comfortable options for everyday wear.
It is not lost on me that I am still able to make exceptions for short periods of wear or instances where the style of a shoe matters more to me than the comfort of a shoe.
There are so many affordable options!!
You know how when you’re shopping for something specific, you usually can’t find a thing? Well, that didn’t happen this year. I found affordable options for summer kicks from a variety of stores. In fact, it was difficult to narrow it down!
I stuck with fairly classic styles and colors so that next year I won’t feel like I need to buy anything unless I want to get in on a trend. Coming into Spring/Summer was stressful knowing I didn’t have shoe options for the outfits I wanted to style. (If you’re dealing with real-life problems, I am v sorry. I KNOW this shows my privilege but that was a thing on my mind.)
My Picks for Summer Kicks
I hit up LuLu’s, H&M, Target, and DSW. Of course, I mainly shopped online because who doesn’t, but also popped into physical Target and DSW stores.
Lulus
Lulu’s had so many on-trend options, but their shoes run extremely narrow! Just a heads up. I typically don’t order a wide width so I didn’t think to this time.
This pair of platform espadrilles was one of the few pairs that were wide enough, BUT the ankle strap cut off my circulation on the last hole. I considered adding a hole with my leather hole punch but there really wasn’t enough room. AND in spite of the fact that my circulation was being cut off, my foot wiggled around far too much for my liking.

I only ended up keeping a pair of on-trend nude block heels with a clear lucite upper and a square toe and a pair of strappy sandals that were final sale. To be honest, they still do not fit the best but this was one trend I wanted to get in on and I think they look nice.
Target
I love Target’s selection this year and was impressed by their comfort level.

This classic black strappy heel will never go out of style and I can already think of at least 10 ways to wear it!

I also snagged these neutral colored mules that are likely the most comfortable sandal I have ever owned. The faux leather is so soft and conforms to my foot perfectly.
DSW
Even when I can’t buy them all, this huge store full of shoes makes me happy. I go down the aisle trying on shoes. The good thing about this is that I rule out options I’d been eyeing on Pinterest or social media.
Like dad sneakers, for example. Sure they may have been the most comfortable tennis shoe I’ve ever worn. BUT they make me like 10ft tall! Maybe it’s because of heels but I don’t particularly like to feel taller than my already 5’10” unless I’m dressed up and really going for it.

I instead went for these classic Reeboks. I’ve already styled them with a nice top and jeans but I’m excited to wear them with something unexpected like a summer dress. I mean, if you’re on social media it’s probs not that unexpected to you now. BUT it’s unexpected for any version of myself prior to this one. Haha!!
H&M
Like I mentioned above heels make me feel some type of way and they are mainly reserved for special occasions in my current phase of life. Your girl needed to have some chic flats in her collection too. If I’m honest with myself, I will go for them the most.

H&M had the most beautiful flats I saw. The textures were unforgettable and unmatched when I looked elsewhere. I can’t remember the last time I had a white shoe option for summer but they are so versatile. This classic pair is just lovely. I spotted it well before my failed Lulus order and couldn’t get my mind off of it.
I also picked up this black pair (pictured in the header image) with the snakeskin texture. This classic black option is great with prints and solids.
