Depending on the source, trench coats have traditionally been relegated to the transitional seasons of Spring and Fall. I’d like to make the case for them throughout the year, depending on the location of course.
Prior to a recent thrifting adventure, I didn’t have the classic trench coat in my wardrobe. Wouldn’t you know, when I found myself longing for one, they weren’t “in season” and I couldn’t just pop into the store and grab one. If you’re from the Midwest you likely know what I’m talking about. Like when winter stuttered on and off well past its official start date. It’s such a complicated time of year for us as we know we need to wear something but will likely look very silly in a puffy winter coat by mid-day.
Another time I find myself wanting one is in the middle of summer and the temp drops 20 degrees stepping inside a restaurant. Suddenly my sundress feels like far too little material for reasons completely unrelated to modesty. A lightweight trench coat is perfect for such occasions.
Now that we have identified how well the trench coat assists with thermoregulation, let’s dive into a few more reasons why you might want one in your wardrobe.
Trench coats never go out of style.
Seriously, they never do. If you don’t believe me check out this article tracing them back to the late 1800s. Granted at the time, they were worn mainly by men. Trench coats became a classic staple in women’s fashion near the end of WWII.
Trench coats are incredibly versatile.
You can dress a trench coat up or dress it down. You can wear it with jeans and a T-shirt or wear it alone as a dress (peep Priyanka Chopra at the 2017 Met Gala.)
Trench coats make you feel some type of way.
Now I can’t exactly explain this one, nor do I have a research article to back it up. When you try on a good trench coat, you’ll know exactly what I mean. You start swinging it open dramatically to the side. Your best poses will start to come out in front of the mirror (moves you didn’t even know you had!) And at least 5 different places you can wear your new baby will come to mind.
Thrifted
I hit up the thrift store for my birthday and happened upon these two beautiful trench coats. I couldn’t believe my luck. Even stalked one of them from the back room of the thrift store onto the floor. Haha!

I cannot get over this lovely little number that I snagged for just $8.99! This trench coat is by Jones New York and the details are to die for. From a dainty stitching pattern, tortoise buttons, and the drama of its A-line cut it’s all so good!

Here I styled it simply with a white t-shirt, high-waisted jeans, and strappy black sandals.

I’m fairly certain this next one is vintage and became mine for just $5.99. My first clues were the tags and the fact that it fits more like a 6/8 than a 13/14 in today’s sizing. The cut of this trench is perfect.
AND IT’S MACHINE WASHABLE!! Did you see the tag?! Haha! It seemed to be too good to be true but I had to test it out on day 1 so I’m so glad they weren’t lying!

Here I have styled it with a snakeskin jumps suit that legit feels like pajamas (Seriously, I wish you all could feel it!) and a pair of black pumps.
Trench coats come in so many colors nowadays but I find that these classic colors are the most versatile.
When would you wear a trench coat?
As always we would love to hear your thoughts! What is your trench coat vibe?
