Style & Age

Jenne wrote a post last week discussing whether you have to sacrifice your style for motherhood in order to be good at one or the other.  If you missed that post and you’re a mama that feels like you can’t find the balance, this post is super helpful!  In continuing the conversation in a different way, I wanted to talk about my thoughts on dressing for your age.

I’m sure we’ve all heard the age old comment at some point in our lives from someone telling us to “act our age.”  Growing up that comment is probably relevant and necessary to say, but can the same be said for dressing your age?

As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized more and more that inside I still feel like the 16 year old me.  I mean even at 16 I was a homebody and practically a grandma because I didn’t go out much and went to bed relatively early.  So that could have something to do with it lol.  But I guess what I’m getting at is, is there a certain age I shouldn’t be wearing something?

The short answer is no.  The long answer comes with a few questions.

1.  Is age relevant to your style?

Style & Age 5

For many, age is just a number.  That’s how I like to look at it when it comes to style as well.  I also think trends and your ever-evolving style is more relevant than your age.  Crop tops and a nice high-waisted bottom is where it’s at for me most days, others I love a good sweater or blazer and denim.  I wouldn’t have even thought to wear crop tops and high waisted pants when I was 16.  But that just wasn’t in 11 years ago and people still weren’t even prepared to accept leggings as pants then (thank goodness that’s changed).

2.  Should you sacrifice your confidence and happiness in order to dress “age appropriately?”

Style & Age 6

We obviously have to wear something every single day of our lives.  So why should we sacrifice anything when it comes to our style?  We are huge supporters of women wearing whatever makes them feel most confident.  If style is something that’s important to you and makes you happy then just go with it regardless of if it’s “age appropriate.”

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, I know my style will evolve and change as I get older, but that’s not to say its because of my age.  It’s more because trends are changing and so is our taste.  I think that women should feel empowered to wear whatever it may be she feels most confident in, regardless of their age!

Tell us your thoughts!

Have you ever skipped out on buying something you liked, because you felt like you’re too old to wear it?  I know I’ve done that a time or two so you’re not alone!  Tell us what you think about dressing your age.

” For what it’s worth… it’s never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you’ve never felt before. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start over again.
