I think one of the biggest mistakes that we can make is doubting ourselves. Not only is it a mistake, you’re just doing yourself a huge disservice. Think about it, how many times have you avoided even trying something because you’ve doubted yourself? How many times have you tried and given up, because you’ve doubted yourself? I guarantee you, you’re lack of belief in your abilities has held you back from something in your life.
The past year for me has been all about overcoming fear and self-doubt. A few weeks ago, I talked about steps to overcoming fear, if you missed that check it out here. I thought this would be the perfect time to share a few things about how I’m working to turn my self-doubt into confidence.
Fake it til’ you make it!
When I say this I mean, fake the confidence in anything you do until you’re actually confident in what you’re doing. I have listened to the podcasts, taken many of the courses, and read the books by those that “made it”. One common theme is that they just had to fake it until they got to where they are now. I can’t even count how many times I’ve started and stopped this blogging thing because of all my doubts. But now I’m just over here faking it until I make it!
Know you’re not a fraud
When you have a hobby that you want to turn into a business, know you’re not a fraud. We’re in this huge entrepreneurial era friends. It’s okay to do something without a college degree and years and years of experience and not feel like a fraud doing it! There are so many examples of this in my life aside from blogging.
I started hand-lettering years ago and have dreamt of selling prints ever since. I’ve also recently (as in last month) started to dabble in watercolor and now want to sell prints even more. I’ve always felt like a fraud because there are so many people that have years and years of experience doing these things. But just because they have experience doesn’t mean I should doubt my own abilities. Here’s a peak into my new watercolor obsession.
Stick to what makes you happy
In the wise words of Gary Vee, stick to what makes you happy. I think we’ve all had enough of sticking to what we’re good at or sticking to what will make us the most money. How about we stop doubting the fact that we can actually make an income sticking to what makes us happy. Yeah, maybe it takes a while longer to get there but who cares. Long term happiness sounds like a better deal to me than a temporary struggle to get there.
Could you imagine the world we’d live in if everyone was doing what they love? I think it would be truly incredible and world changing. If there’s something that makes you happy and you want to do it, let go of your doubts and just do it!
What makes you happy friend? Tell me in the comments so I can get to know you!
