I’m sure you are all well aware of how wise my sister Jenne is from reading her Faith Full Friday posts, but here’s yet another example of her wisdom. I’ve been overwhelmed with many aspects of change and tough decisions recently and the question she asked me really helped me in making this tough call.
She said, “Take fear out of the equation. What would you do if you weren’t afraid?”
When she asked me this, tears immediately welled up in my eyes as I realized that just about every decision I’ve faced in my life has been met by fear. I fear the unknown of what my decisions will mean for my future. Will this choice make us struggle financially? Can it hurt my relationships? Will people judge me for making this choice?
When I step back and look at what fear is doing in my life, I realized it’s all that has been holding me back. For what though? Fear doesn’t serve me, it hinders me from being the best version of myself that I can be. It destroys my hope and limits the dreams and goals I have for myself. After coming to this realization, I went to work to find steps that I could take to over come fear, and I just had to share them with you.'Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear'Click To Tweet
1. Take fear out of the equation
First of all, I of course had to include this as the number one way to rid fear. Anytime you feel afraid, ask yourself “what would I do if I wasn’t afraid?” You’ll be surprised how empowering it is to separate what’s actually on your heart from the fear that’s on your mind. Remember, you don’t have to live your life in fear. There is hope and your dreams and goals are attainable when you take fear out of the equation.
2. Tear up the what if’s
I don’t know about you, but when I face a tough decision my mind immediately thinks of all the negative what ifs. What if I fail? What if people judge me? I found the best way to get those off of my chest is to write them down and immediately tear them up. Write down all of the positive what ifs and put them where you can see them everyday. What if I succeed? What if this changes my life in the best way?
The reality is, you don’t know what will happen unless you try. Don’t let fear prevent you from trying or making decisions that could truly change your life.
3. Turn your fear into laughter
Lastly, as cliche as it is laughter really is the best medicine. My husband has always been my number one supporter who believes in me and all of my crazy ideas. Whenever I’m fearful of decisions we face together, he always seems so confident in what we should do. I asked him recently how he handles fear and he reminded me of one of the Harry Potter movies.
Now don’t hate me when I say this, but I’m not well versed in all things Harry Potter. I can say that I’ve seen the majority of the movies though and I do like them, I promise! Anyways, there was a spell that essentially takes fear and replaces it with a funny version of that fear. I think that’s a great way to overcome whatever you’re really afraid of.
I mean, it’s pretty unfortunate that we can’t actually do a spell and a spider turns into a spider on skates but we CAN still choose to laugh over being afraid. The next time you’re afraid try to find a funny version of it and keep that in your mind. If you can’t find anything to laugh about in place of your fear, just go look at some funny GIFS. Those always seem to do the job!
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10Click To Tweet
I really hope these tips help you step out of fear and into complete and utter peace about the decisions you’re faced with in life. Tell me, what would you do if you weren’t afraid? I’ll share what I would do in next weeks Monday Musing, so meet me back here next week!
