I purchased the Lerberg Trestle legs in gray from Ikea. I love that these are only $15 a piece and you only need two, due to their design. After an extensive search for table legs (that I could tolerate), this was literally the cheapest option I could find. Simply follow the included instructions to assemble these.
We purchased the wood and had it cut at Home Depot. Hubby could totally have cut them for me at home but it is just so easy and FREE to have them cut your wood their for you! In all, we purchased one 2x8in – 8ft board and one 2x10in – 8ft board.
Using our Dewalt Power Sander I first used a medium (80) grit sanding disc to soften the edges and corners. Then I sanded with a very fine (220) grit to smooth the wood. This second sanding makes all the difference in the texture of the wood!
I then wiped down the wood with a damp cloth and applied a thin coat of satin polyurethane. That dried overnight and I decided to apply a second light coat of the poly before sanding. When that was dry, I used the power sander with the fine grit and applied the final coat of the poly. When that was dry, it still felt a bit tacky, so I did a very light sanding by hand with a fine grit sand paper.
Mark then used 4 of these 10 inch mending plates to attach the boards together. We used a strong double sided adheasive (placed along the tope of the trestle legs) to keep the table top in place. For me, it was all about the details of the wood. I made sure to consider this in the layout of the boards. I love how these large knots were showcased in the center of the desk.
The iMac is a refurb, purchased from the Apple store. It is a great way to maximize your budget while having the protection of easy returns and great customer service! Of course the gold office accessories including the scissors, stapler, tape dispenser and portfolio are from Target. The marble coasters were a Home Goods find (only $5.99 for 4 of them!) but I found some similar ones at West Elm. The galvanized plant pot was purchased from Ikea, but they are also available on Amazon.
Hope you enjoyed this DIY tutorial! Is there a space in your house that has been difficult to furnish due to dimensions? What was your solution?
