In case you missed our little survey we did as part of our giveaway (you can still fill it out here if you’d like!), we asked you guys to ask us questions for Style Wise Wednesday. One of the questions we were asked to touch on was how to step out of your comfort zone. Here are our thoughts and 5 tips we came up with in this conversation!
L | I think we had a pretty good example of that when we did our post about mixing patterns. The styles we found were not what we typically would look into but when we did, we realized that it was something that actually worked. It’s fun to look into things that interest you and just try it out even if you think it might not work!
J | We both in that conversation were like noooo, but then we started looking at Pinterest and realized there were so many options. So it’s really just experimenting and not caring what other people think, but how YOU feel in what you’re stepping out into. I’ve gotten hung up on that, worrying about peoples perceived judgements. People literally aren’t thinking about what you’re wearing. At this stage in our lives, other people are often so busy worrying about their to do list. You think they do more than they actually are!
L | I honestly think you don’t need to worry at all what other people think and think about what you’re interested in and feel comfortable in. That’s the thing with finding your unique style, you just try a bunch of different things and what works best for you and what you feel best in.
J | It’s not just comfort either, it’s an inner confidence. That’s what it brings out.
L | It’s also a whole lot of trial and error. Find what works best for you and what you feel best in, with only YOU in mind. Don’t have anyone else in mind or others opinions in mind. Just be true to your style and what makes you feel your best.
J | Maybe ask yourself a few questions first too. Do you want to step out of your comfort zone because you’re in a style rut and want to change that? or Do you feel pressure to step out of your comfort zone? If you feel pressure, then don’t step out of it. If you’re wanting to try something different though, you just have to try different things to find what you’re most confident in!
I shared a tip on my Instagram today where I was wearing a super basic outfit. I was wearing a white top and denim jeans, but the top was anything but basic. It was is super detailed and had a lot of interest. I even paid attention to the tank top I wore underneath, it had a more feminine look. Since the top wasn’t basic, it took the whole outfit and elevated it. Anyone could wear basic jeans and a white shirt, it’s a super classic outfit. But if you’re wanting to step out of your comfort zone, play around with what the shirt looks like. Play with different aspects of a basic outfit as a way to slowly transition out of your comfort zone and into your unique style.
L | I think that’s a great tip asking yourself why you’re wanting to step out of your comfort zone!
J | I feel like for us there’s been this desire to do something different, but we let a bunch of external stuff keep us from doing that. Including our location, we live in the midwest in areas where not everyone is super adventurous with their style. When I feel my best I perform my best in my daily duties.
Today on Instagram I found this incredible post and this really explained EXACTLY how I feel about why I do what I do.
L | It’s seriously not an external thing it’s internal. I don’t feel like I have to have makeup on for other people, I feel like I have to get done up for me. I just function better and am more productive that way.
J | It’s been so put upon in society about being “real”. But what if your real self has a full face of makeup and a dressy outfit everyday that you’re spending at home picking up after your kids. That’s my real self.
L | And there’s nothing wrong with that! I feel like people think it’s not realistic, but it can be for some and that’s okay! I’m sure we’ve mentioned this before in one of these posts, but you don’t have to confine yourself to this box of style. Say you’ve worn yoga pants every single day for the last year like I have. I can change that, I don’t have to be stuck in my yoga pants. I can confidently step out of that and into something different. I’m not tied to one specific style just because that’s what I’ve done forever.
J | We get stuck in these ruts, but once I started getting into style again I felt like I had to defend my style. But we don’t have to defend our style to anybody. It could be something you’ve always wanted to do or it could be a new desire that you want to venture out into a different realm and that’s okay. Don’t feel like you have to prove yourself to anybody and don’t be afraid of failure. If your outfit doesn’t work out. There’s always tomorrow, or theres always later today even. If you end up in something you’re completely uncomfortable in return it! Don’t force it to work. Most stores have really good return policies. If you want to experiment too, go thrifting to try to find some things for cheap so you don’t feel like you’re wasting a ton of money!
Here are all of our fave affordable stores. Don’t forget to hit clearance racks at these stores too because you’ll find some treasures!
Tips For Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
1. Ask Yourself These Two Questions
Do I want to step out of my comfort zone because I’m in a style rut and want to change that or am I wanting to do this because I feel pressured to? If you’re answer is yes to the second question, please don’t do it! Our goal here is to help you be confident in YOUR style, not the style you’re feeling pressured to be in. If your answer is yes to the first question, here’s how you can get step out of that comfort zone!
It’s so easy to just run to the store and not have single clue what you’re looking for and come home with stuff that you don’t love. Take the time to research the kind of style you’re going for. You might even find that you have some pieces already that you just haven’t styled the way someone else has on Pinterest. Try pairing things you already have in different ways!
3. Take Risks
Maybe there’s a style you’re wanting to try, but are afraid to. We want to tell you to just try it girl! There’s nothing wrong with trying a style out and realizing it doesn’t work for you or make you feel confident. Don’t worry, return it or donate it and move on! Don’t be afraid of failure. The only way to success is through the occasional failure.
4. Stop Worrying About What Others Think
If you are afraid to step out of your comfort zone because of others, try to realize that they’re thinking about what you’re wearing far less than you think they are. Dress for yourself and no one else. Dress to impress YOU.
5. Stop Trying To Defend Your Style
This kind of goes along with the above tip, but it’s really important to remember you have nothing to defend. If you’re confident and feelin’ yourself in what you’re wearing than you’re doing it right! Just be you girl and rock your style with confidence and you won’t feel like you have to defend anything.
