Happy Monday friends! We’re getting down to the wire as our house goes up for sale in a few weeks. As someone that hasn’t sold a home before I’ve been on the hunt for affordable ways to update our home. These are a few ways we’ve updated things around here that we found helped improve the look of our home.
1. Transform your old doors.
If you’re not looking to drop hundreds (like us) to update all of your doors to the desired white 6 panels, just update your current doors. The original doors in our home were wooden with outdated hinges and knobs. We just picked up some white paint and trim to add our own panels. Grab some new hinges and knobs while you’re at it and you’ll have a “brand new” door when you’re all done!
2. Add board and batten in a hallway.
Our hallway originally had chair rail installed. It was a bit outdated and dinged up so we ripped it out. Unfortunately the layers of paint that had collected on either side of the chair rail left the wall a little bit of an eyesore. We covered it all up with board and batten and the walls in the hallway look good as new!
3. Repaint all your old cabinets and add new knobs.
Our kitchen was super outdated when we moved in. The biggest problem for me was the sky blue walls and the old cabinets. A coat of paint on the walls and the cabinets completely changed the look of the space though. We also updated the flooring in there which obviously isn’t as affordable. But if painting the cabinets and updating the knobs is all you can do though, it makes a huge difference!
4. Open up a space when possible
Our home is a 1500 square foot tri-level home, so we wanted to try to open up our living space as much as possible. There are a number of ways you can do this affordably one of those being just by how you place your furniture in the space. Another way is to knock out that entry way closet off your living space and making it an adorable and functional space. It’s not a ton of extra space, but if this was closed off by a door the room would feel much smaller. All this took was a little bead board and some cute coat racks to complete.
5. Add longer curtains to your living space
I am a firm believer in floor to ceiling curtains. It’s amazing how they transform your space and make it appear so much bigger. If you want any room to appear bigger then try placing your curtains a bit higher and make sure they’re long.
Tell me in the comments what other affordable tips you have for updating your house!
